Born in the southern French town of Alès, this artist, often known as the "king of the trumpet", first began his musical studies at the age of eighteen after serving in the military. His father, a miner and committed trumpeter, had already taught him the basics of the trumpet. Because of his extraordinary talent, he was accepted at the famous Paris Conservatory as a student of Professor Bathélémy. In his first year of studies alone, Maurice André received a commendation for cornet players and shortly thereafter the first prize for trumpet. At the age of twenty he had the honor of being the first trumpeter at France´s most renowned music academy.
After having gathered some experience as a jazz musician, Maurice André joined the Lamoureux Orchestra, an orchestra rich in tradition, as a solo trumpeter as well as the National Orchestra. Soon his international career took off with engagements in Athens, Vienna, Salzburg, Cambridge and Munich.
In 1955 he won the Grand Prix du Concours International de Genève, in 1963 the first prize at the International Music Competition of Radio Stations in the Federal Republic of Germany. At the age of 33 he was appointed professor at the conservatory in Paris.
His ability is acclaimed nearly throughout the world. His popularity is founded on his incomparable instrumental ability and his extraordinary personal and artistic charisma.
